The capital of Fiji is Suva, but the launch pad for happy holidaymakers is the Nadi International Airport. It’s here you’ll descend in to Fiji and set off for your destination, whether it be nearby Denarau Island, the Coral Coast or outlying islands.
There is plenty going on in the town of Nadi (pronounced “Nandi”), with restaurants, bars, cafes, markets, retail shops, churches and a cinema showing flicks from Hollywood, Bollywood and all points in-between. Don’t be surprised to hear the sounds of Fijian and Hindi music wafting from storefronts.
Food-wise, it’s a smorgasbord, with options including Indian, Chinese, Thai, Middle Eastern, burgers, barbecue, Japanese, seafood, Korean and pizza. Restaurants include Habibi Fiji, The New Nadi Farmers Club, Tu’s Place and The Grace Road Kitchen.
There are also a number of cafes, such as the air-conditioned, expanded ZigZag Café, where you can enjoy milkshakes, coffee, sandwiches, fried chicken and Fijian deserts and fruitcake. The Hot Bread Kitchen sells pies and goodies that will remind you of home, such as lamingtons and cupcakes.
By spending money in Nadi you know you are contributing directly to the local economy. Be aware, though, that some businesspeople can be a little too enthusiastic in trying to gain your custom. If you find yourself being shepherded towards a shop you don’t want to visit, remain polite but firm.
There are a number of reasonably priced Fiji resorts, hotels and villas close to both Nadi Airport and Nadi Town, which can be useful if you need an overnight stay ahead of a flight connection.
Half and full-day tours depart from Nadi, where you can visit places such as the Sabeto Valley, home to thousands of varieties of orchids at the amazing Garden of the Sleeping Giant; Nadi Temple; Vuda Lookout; Sugar City (Lautoka); and Viseisei Village. Zipline through caves and canyons, visit a mud spa or a local school, take a cooking class, or visit Kula Wild Adventure Park (formerly Kula Eco Park).
Hoot wants you to have a happier holiday and can assist in booking tours or activities as part of your holiday package.
