Best Beaches and Surfing

If you know anything about Fiji, then you know that it’s a place bejeweled with some of the most stunning beaches in the world. The post-card images of turquoise water lapping gently against palm-tree crested beaches of milky white are every bit as real as you could ever expect. But unlike other beaches that you may be accustomed to in say, Australia, most of the beaches in Fiji aren’t what you’d call ‘surf beaches’. Meaning, there aren’t waves crashing on the shore and surfers pock-marked across the horizon. Due to most of the islands of Fiji being bordered by coral reefs, the waters shouldering the land are typically quite lagoon-like – perfect for snorkelling, water sports, paddling around or just admiring the natural wonderment.

Here are some of the top surf breaks in Fiji:

1. Cloudbreak

  • Location: Off Tavarua Island (accessible by boat)
  • Level: Advanced
  • Details: This is Fiji’s most famous wave and is consistently ranked among the top ten in the world. Cloudbreak offers powerful, long, and fast waves, breaking over a shallow reef. Best for experienced surfers due to its intensity, but thrilling to watch for everyone else!

2. Restaurants

  • Location: Near Cloudbreak, Tavarua Island
  • Level: Advanced
  • Details: Another iconic wave that breaks over a reef, with hollow and consistent waves. Named after the restaurant at Tavarua Island Resort, it’s a spot for skilled surfers who can handle its barreling waves.

3. Namotu Left

  • Location: Off Namotu Island
  • Level: Intermediate to advanced
  • Details: Known for its left-hand reef break, Namotu Left offers long rides with less intensity than Cloudbreak, making it a favorite for those seeking manageable yet exciting waves. The atmosphere here is relaxed, with opportunities for SUP and kitesurfing.

4. Wilkes Pass

  • Location: Near Malolo Island
  • Level: Intermediate to advanced
  • Details: This reef break features a long right-hander that’s powerful and suitable for both intermediate and seasoned surfers. It’s also a little less crowded, making it a great choice for a more relaxed session.

5. Desperations

  • Location: Mamanuca Islands
  • Level: Intermediate
  • Details: This break is known for its fun, fast waves and is great when other spots are small. It’s ideal for intermediate surfers, with consistent swells and less crowding.

6. Sigatoka Sand Dunes

  • Location: Coral Coast, Viti Levu
  • Level: Beginner to intermediate
  • Details: For those new to surfing, the Coral Coast offers sandy beach breaks. Sigatoka is mellower than the reefs, making it a perfect place to learn.
